“Providing a realism to our medical training improves critical thinking and direct transfer of skill from the classroom lab to the streets resulting in a more field-ready EMS provider.” --Courtney Hull, WCTC associate dean of Fire/EMS
PEWAUKEE, Wis. (Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2024) – On Thursday, Nov. 7, from 8-10 a.m., Waukesha County Technical College will celebrate a renovated and renamed lab space, and showcase a new collection of realistic, sophisticated training simulators, thanks to a significant financial contribution from the Generac Foundation.
The Generac Foundation provided WCTC and the WCTC Foundation with a $200,000 donation to purchase 13 high-tech Lifecast Body Simulation manikins for use by those in Fire/EMS programs, as well as those taking refresher and continuing education courses. The manikins will be used in the newly named Generac Human Patient Simulation Lab.
The Nov. 7 event, which will be held in Building S, Rooms S-228 and S-231, will include the following highlights:
- A ribbon cutting ceremony with guest speakers. Remarks will be given by:
- Rich Barnhouse, Ph.D., president of WCTC
- Rhonda Matschke, executive vice president of human resources at Generac
- Paul Farrow, Waukesha County Executive at WCTC graduate
- Christina Starcevic of Echo Healthcare/Lifecast Body Simulation
- Courtney Hull, associate dean of Fire/EMS at WCTC
- Refreshments courtesy of Lifecast Body Simulation.
- Tour of the updated space with faculty and students, and opportunities to meet with local fire and EMS professionals.
- Unveiling of high-simulation manikins, which includes seven pediatric models: babies, toddlers and children, and six adult models: teens through senior citizens. The manikins represent a range of ages, ethnicities and skin tones.
- A “manikin experience” demonstrating the realism of the patient simulators (down to the color of their veins to the individual eyelashes), and how these work in tandem with other technologies to mimic emergency scenarios.
“Through this generous gift from Generac, we are able to transform our educational opportunities for the next generation of EMS providers by providing them with simulated patients (manikins) that are realistic, highly accurate and diverse in age, gender, race and disabilities,” said Courtney Hull, associate dean for Fire/EMS Training at WCTC. “Providing a realism to our medical training improves critical thinking and direct transfer of skill from the classroom lab to the streets resulting in a more field-ready EMS provider.”
The Generac Foundation focuses its contribution efforts in the areas of education, responders, sustainability and community; it also provides an added element of social responsibility for the betterment of our society.
