Admissions
I'm interested in visiting the campus. How do I schedule a campus tour?
To find out about Recruitment events and/or schedule a campus tour, visit our events page.
Can I start any program in any semester?
No. Some programs only begin in either the fall or spring semester. Visit the "Program Availability" page to find out more about your intended program of study.
Do I need to apply to a program?
Yes, if you intend to complete an associate degree or technical diploma program at WCTC. Submit an application for admissions. You may print one out or you can complete the application online.
What is required to complete the application process?
You will need to submit a completed application form, $30 application fee, official high school transcripts, official college transcripts (if you have previous college coursework), and complete the COMPASS Assessment. Some WCTC programs have additional admission requirements. Call the WCTC Admissions Office at 262.691.5200 for more information.
Is the application fee refundable?
No. The $30 application fee is a one-time, non-refundable processing fee. The fee can be paid in-person (check, money order, cash, charge), by credit card over the phone, or through the mail with a check or money order.
What if I have paid the application fee to WCTC previously?
The $30 Admission Fee is a one-time fee. If you have previously paid the fee to WCTC, you do not need to pay again.
I previously paid a $30 application fee to another Wisconsin Technical College. Do I need to pay the fee again?
Yes, an application fee needs to be paid to each technical college to which you apply.
What are "official" transcripts?
Official transcripts are issued directly to WCTC from the high school or college. Official transcripts are sent in sealed envelopes and contain official signatures/seals of the high school or college. To request official transcripts, you will need to contact your high school and previous college(s). There is usually a form you will need to complete and sign. Also, there is usually a fee for issuing official transcripts. Check with your high school or previous college directly to learn more about requesting official transcripts. Additionally, it can take several weeks to have official transcripts issued. It is recommended that you request official transcripts as soon as you start the admissions process.
I graduated from high school over 10 years ago. Do you still need my high school transcript?
This depends on the program. For many programs, it is not required to submit transcripts if you have been out of high school for more than ten years. However, there are some programs that require high school transcripts regardless of age. To find out if you will need to submit official high school transcripts, call the Admissions Office at 262.691.5200. To request transcripts, contact your high school and have them send an official transcript directly to WCTC. (If your name has changed since graduation, be sure to remind your school to write your new name on your transcript.)
Can I get my transcripts returned to me once they are sent to WCTC?
No. Once you submit documents to WCTC, they become the property of WCTC and they cannot be returned to you. If you would like copies of transcripts for personal use, you can contact your high school and/or previous college and request copies to be issued directly to you (Note: your high school/previous college may charge a fee for this request).
Do I need to take an entrance assessment to be admitted to WCTC?
Yes. If you have not taken an entrance assessment in the past five years, (ACT, Accuplacer, COMPASS or Asset), you will need to take the entrance assessment in order to be admitted to WCTC.
How do I sign up to take the COMPASS Assessment?
You can sign up online or call 262.695.6215.
How can I prepare for the COMPASS Assessment?
You can visit the Assessment Center online . These pages will give you information on what you will be tested on and how you can prepare for it as well as information on basic skills preparation opportunities.
What circumstances would allow for a waiver of the entrance assessment?
If you have completed a similar assessment (ACT, Accuplacer, Asset, etc.) in the past five years, you may be eligible for a waiver, depending on the scores of the previous assessment. Also, you may be eligible for a waiver if you have previously completed college level course work in Reading, Writing and Math with a grade of "C" or higher. Official college transcripts for all formerly attended colleges will need to be submitted to the WCTC Admissions Office prior to a review for a potential assessment waiver. Call the WCTC Admissions Office at 262.691.5200 for more details regarding an assessment waiver.
Is there an application deadline?
Yes, application deadlines are set for both spring and fall semester. Additionally, not all programs/courses are offered each semester. I have already taken courses at another college. Will they transfer to my program at WCTC?
Contact your previous college(s) and have them send official copies of your transcript to the WCTC Admissions Office. Complete the Transfer of Credit request form and submit the form to the Admissions Office. Credit transfer review may take several weeks to complete. You are encouraged to send your official transcripts to WCTC as soon as possible. For more information about the Credit Transfer process, call 262.691.5279.
If I am admitted to my program does that mean I am also registered for courses?
No. Admission is separate from registration. Students are encouraged to register as soon as possible on or after the New Student Registration date to ensure the best possible selection of courses. Note: Admission to a program does not guarantee that seats will be available in required courses.
If I am registered for courses does that mean I am admitted to a program?
No. Admission is separate from registration. To be admitted to a program, you must complete the admission process for your intended program of study.
When can I register for classes?
Once you have been admitted to your program, you will receive information regarding registration information approximately 4 weeks prior to New Student Registration. Registration dates are also posted on the college calendar.
Can I take classes if I am not admitted to a program?
Yes. If you are not admitted to a program and would like to take a class, you are considered "non-degree seeking" and will be allowed to register with the general public. If you register for courses as a "non-degree seeking" student, you can only register for courses for which you meet the pre-requisites and for courses that are not "program restricted". Also, non-degree seeking students are not eligible to apply for financial aid and they cannot participate in "continuing student" priority registration.

Financial Aid
If I have questions regarding my FAFSA, who do I contact?
Either contact the WCTC Financial Aid Department or contact the U.S. Department of Education at 800.4333.243.
- Check the status of your FAFSA
- Order a duplicate Student Aid Report (SAR)
- Get help filing your FAFSA or correcting your SAR
- Add WCTC's school code (005294) to your SAR
- Obtain general student aid information
May I decline all or part of my Award Offer?
Yes. Declining some of your awarded aid will not affect your other awards.
If I add or drop credits, will my financial aid change?
Yes. Your financial aid is based on the number of credits you enroll in; therefore if your number of credits changes, your financial aid may change. If you drop a course after starting it, your financial aid may change. If you are considering dropping a course, please contact the financial aid department or refer to the Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy.
How do I re-apply for financial aid for next year?
To apply for financial aid for subsequent years all you will need is your U.S. Department of Education PIN. If you have forgotten your PIN, you can request a duplicate from the PIN Web site, you can ask to have your PIN sent to you by e-mail or U.S. postal mail. You will receive your duplicate PIN in 4 hours by e-mail or in 7-10 days by postal mail. Once you have your pin all you need to do is complete the Renewal FAFSA. This can be done anytime after January 1.
Do I have to include my parent(s)' information on the FAFSA?
The IRS and U.S. Department of Education (ED) have different rules for whether or not a student is considered dependent versus independent. Moreover, a student could be considered independent by IRS rules but dependent by ED rules. The only way a student can be considered independent for 2008-2009 by ED rules, and therefore not be required to include parental income on the FAFSA, is if the student can answer "yes" to one of the following:
- Were you born before January 1, 1986?
- As of the date you filed the FAFSA, are you were married?
- Do you have children or dependents who receive more than half of their financial support from you?
- At any time since you turned 13, were both of your parents deceased, were you in foster care, or were you a dependent or ward of the court?
- Are you currently serving on active duty or are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces?
- Are you or were you an emancipated minor as determined by a court in your state of legal residence?
- At any time on or after July 1, 2008 did your high school district homeless liaison, a director of an emergency shelter or transitional housing program funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, or a director of a runaway or homeless youth basic center or transitional living program determine that you were an unaccompanied youth who was homeless?
If the student answers "no" to all of the above the student is required by ED to include parental income regardless of whether or not the parents claim the student on their taxes. If the student answers "yes" to at least one of the above the student is not required by ED to include parental income, again regardless of whether or not the parents claim the student on their taxes.
I am an international student, can I receive financial aid?
In order to be eligible for federal or state financial aid, you must either be a U.S. Citizen or an eligible noncitizen. Generally, you are en eligible noncitizen if you are: (1) a U.S. permanent resident with a Permanent Resident Card (I-551); (2) a conditional permanent resident (I-551C); or (3) the holder of an Arrival-Departure Record (I-94) from the Department of Homeland Security showing any one of the following designations: "Refugee," "Asylum Granted," "Parole" (I-94 confirms paroled for a minimum of one year and status has not expired), or "Cuban-Haitian Entrant." If you are in the U.S. on an F1 of F2 student visa, or a J1 or J2 exchange visitor visa, or a G series visa (pertaining to international organizations), you are not eligible for federal or state financial aid.

To obtain reserve material, go to the Checkout/Information Desk. Renewal of reserve items is permitted if another copy is available. If no copy is available for renewal, you will be asked to wait one day before checking it out again. This provides other students needing the item the opportunity to check it out.

Registration
Where am I on the wait list?
Students may contact the Registration department at 262.691.5578 to inquire about their wait list position.
How does the wait list process work?
Wait lists are monitored daily. Students are notified by mail or by phone if space becomes available, before the start date of a class.
What are my chances of getting into the class, if I'm wait listed?
It is difficult to determine. Registration monitors wait lists daily and openings in classes tend to occur more often as the start date of the class approaches. Openings in some classes are frequent, while openings in other classes are rare.
Students may not attend the first class to see if there is a "no show". Most departments do not allow late entry into classes.
How do I wait list myself for a course?
You can wait list yourself on your OIS account, in-person in the Registration department, C-019, or by phone at 262.691.5578.
Can I register for a section and wait list in another section?
College policy requires that a student choose either to take an available seat in a class or to take a chance on getting into a class from a waitlist.
If a student is moved from a waitlist into a class, s/he will drop the original class creating an open spot. If that occurs too close to the start date of the original class, that could make it too late for another student to take the open spot in the dropped class.
How do I move into a class, if I'm wait listed?
If an opening occurs, before the start date of the class, you would be moved from the wait list into a class; and notified by mail or by phone.
I wait listed for a class, and now I'm not on the wait list. What happened?
Students may be removed from multiple wait lists, or if they are registered in a class and wait listed in another section. Wait lists are monitored daily.
If the class search shows that there is an opening, may I take the seat?
Openings in classes are filled in order, so the next person on the wait list will be moved into the class. (The college reserves the right to rescind wait list order in the week preceeding the start date of the class.)
Are there still openings in a class?
Use the class search to view possible openings.
Why can't I be on more than one wait list?
WCTC's policy is to remove students from multiple wait lists to optomize resources and provide wider access to classes. State refund rules allow students to drop until the day prior to the start of the class. Consequently, without this policy, a student could "tie up" multiple seats until the day before a class starts. At that time, it is often too late for another student to gain access to the class.
Do I have to be choose a degree at WCTC to sign up for classes?
No. WCTC has open registration periods for the general public for fall, spring and summer courses. Check the College Calendar for registration start dates.
Should I go to the first class, if I'm not contacted regarding the wait list?
No, students may not attend the first class.
What is the difference between "registration" and "admissions"
Registration means to sign up for a class or classes as a course taker, not a degree seeker; Admissions means to apply to complete a degree, diploma or certificate program at WCTC.
When can I register for classes
