Information about Chapter 35 Survivors' & Dependents' Educational Assistance Benefits

Chapter 35 Survivor's & Dependents' Educational Assistance provides education and training opportunities to eligible dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-related condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service related condition. The program offers up to 45 months of education benefits.

Eligibility Criteria

How do I apply for Chapter 35 Survivors' & Dependents' Educational Assistance Benefits?

  1. Complete VA Form 22-5490, Application for Survivor's and Dependents' Educational Assistance
    VA Form 22-5490 can be obtained from the Veteran/Military Benefits desk in C-019, can be downloaded from the web, or you can complete it online.
  2. If you have previously received VA educational benefits, you will need to complete VA Form 22-5495, Request for Change of Program or Place of Training Form, which can be obtained from the Veteran/Military Benefits desk in C-019 or can be downloaded from the web.
  3. Submit a copy of veterans' DD-214 to the Veteran/Military Benefits desk in C-019.
  4. If a dependent of the veteran, submit a birth certificate.
  5. If a spouse of the dependent, submit a marriage certificate.
  6. Complete and submit a VA Education Benefit Enrollment Certification Form
    This can be obtained from the Veteran/Military Benefits desk in C-019. This must be done every semester if you wish to have us certify your benefits for the semester.

The monthly benefit paid to you is based on the type of training you are in and on your training time. Payment charts.
